Obscura - Cosmogenesis
Tech death, je moet er van houden. Persoonlijk kan ik bands als Origin, (0ude) Cryptopsy en aanverwanten wel waarderen, al moet gezegd worden dat de meeste albums me niet van begin tot eind kunnen boeien, met name omdat de eindeloze aaneenschakeling van technische riffs en het constante geraas op en duur vermoeiend beginnen te worden.
Hoewel Obscura regelmatig het gaspedaal diep ingedrukt houdt, bevat de muziek voldoende melodie, variatie, pakkende riffs en interessante breaks om gedurende de gehele lengte te kunnen boeien. De sound is te omschrijven als een kruising tussen Death en Necrophagist en ook bands als Cynic en Atheist hebben duidelijk hun sporen achtergelaten op de sound, die ook nog wel melodieuze Zweedse invloeden kent. Eigenlijk bevat dit album alles wat een deathmetal plaat zo de moeite waard kan maken; een gezonde dosis techniek, aggressie, afwisseling en vooral sterke songs.
Opzienbarend is het fretloze baswerk van Jeroen Paul Thesseling (ex-Pestilence) die mooie accenten legt in de muziek en gelukkig een prominente plaats in de eindmix van ‘Cosmogenenis’ heeft gekregen. Perfect is de plaat niet, de verder zuivere en geslaagde productie had op bepaalde ogenblikken nog net iets meer punch mogen hebben en op den duur beginnen de drukke riffjes ook wat op elkaar te lijken. De zang had ook nog wel iets gevarieerder gemogen, ondanks de sporadische toevoeging van ijle computerzang. Och, ik loop eigenlijk te zeiken, want over de gehele linie is dit een zeer geslaagde deathmetal plaat, één van de betere die ik de laatste jaren gehoord heb zelfs. Op de myspace pagina van de band staat een aantal songs, dus oordeel zelf.
